Chalateco Introduce
Chalateco, located in the heart of San Jose, California, offers a truly expansive and authentic culinary experience, specializing in the rich and comforting flavors of Salvadoran and Mexican cuisine. More than just a local eatery, Chalateco has become a cherished destination for Bay Area residents seeking high-quality, homemade dishes that span from hearty all-day breakfasts to complex, flavorful dinner platters. The menu is a testament to the diverse and vibrant food traditions of Central America, providing everything from famous Pupusas to an array of traditional soups and seafood dishes.
This particular location, situated at the busy intersection of Jackson and Alum Rock, has gained significant local acclaim, with many patrons noting its superior quality compared to other locations. It occupies a space that has been transformed into a casual, cozy, and clean establishment, making it perfect for a relaxed family meal or a comfortable solo dining experience. The restaurant is particularly famous for its Al Pastor tacos, which are widely considered some of the very best in the entire San Jose area. While the menu's sheer size and, occasionally, the lack of printed prices can be a minor inconvenience, the consensus on the delicious, authentic taste of the food makes Chalateco a standout choice.
The main Chalateco location is conveniently situated at 2 N Jackson Ave, San Jose, CA 95116, USA. This positioning at the corner of a major intersection in East San Jose makes it highly visible and easily accessible to local traffic. Its physical structure—a renovated space—provides a more traditional restaurant experience compared to a simple taqueria, offering a clean, indoor environment for dining.

The appeal of Chalateco is centered around specific, high-quality menu items and unique features that draw repeat customers from across the region:
- The Best Al Pastor Tacos: This is arguably the biggest draw. The tacos are lauded for their nice, thin, double-layered tortillas, perfect balance of tangy, oily meat, and the traditional garnish of diced onions, cilantro, and pineapple. The high quality is attributed to their dedicated Taquero, Luis, who is often grilling the meat straight off the trompo (vertical spit) on Friday through Sunday evenings.
- Authentic Salvadoran Specialties: Chalateco is a must-visit for its Salvadoran cuisine, including hand-made Pupusas (stuffed corn tortillas) and other regional delights like Plátanos Fritos (Fried Plantains), Yuca Con Chicharrón, and the complete Desayuno Salvadoreño.
- Expansive All-Day Breakfast and Brunch: The breakfast/brunch menu is available all day and includes classics like Huevos Rancheros, Huevos Divorciados, and various Chilaquiles options, catering to those who enjoy a hearty morning meal at any hour.
- Hearty Soups and Stews: The menu features an impressive selection of authentic Sopas (soups) and Caldos (broths), including Sopa de Mariscos (Seafood Soup), Menudo, Caldo de Res (Beef Soup), and Birria En Caldo, perfect for comfort food seekers.
- Quesabirrias and Specialty Plates: The restaurant offers trending and highly demanded items like Quesabirrias (crispy tacos dipped in stew) and unique platters such as the Chala Parrillada and the Molcajete De Mariscos.
- Clean and Comfortable Dining Space: Having transitioned from a truck to a brick-and-mortar location, the clean, cozy interior and ample amenities (like restrooms) enhance the dining experience significantly.

Chalateco on N Jackson Ave is emphatically worth choosing for any resident or visitor in the California Bay Area looking for a truly authentic Central American food experience. The combination of its Salvadoran and Mexican menus creates a dining destination that caters to diverse tastes and cravings for high-quality, flavorful comfort food.
The paramount reason to visit is the Al Pastor Tacos, especially during the weekend and evening hours when Taquero Luis is working. Many locals, who are often harsh critics of street food, rate them as the best in San Jose, standing up against the quality found in East LA. Beyond the tacos, the restaurant’s commitment to genuine Salvadoran dishes, particularly the Pupusas and all-day breakfast options, offers a cultural depth rarely found in combination with such high-quality Mexican fare.
While the pricing is noted to be slightly higher than some small taquerias—and patrons should be mindful of how quickly a large order can add up—the superior quality of the ingredients, the comfortable indoor dining environment, and the fast, attentive service justify the value. The availability of diverse services like reservations, full-menu takeout/delivery, and a full beverage program further enhances the overall dining experience. Choose Chalateco for the unique blend of Salvadoran heart and Mexican spice, and prepare for some of the best Al Pastor tacos you’ll find in Northern California.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1There is no prices on the menu or anywhere, which is quite awkward. Similar thing by Peter’s Bakery. It is quite awkward to ask for the price of the things in the menu! It could be nice if this can get improved. Service was slower than expected.Place was quite clean.Food was quite delicious though :) I would recommend for authentic food testing. Enchiladas were awesome. Tacos very quite okay as well. Not my most favorite though.
May 20 · Semiha CaliskanMe and my partner first came across El Chalateco at the Alum Rock location down the street across from the Mexican Heritage Hall when I saw a Taquero outside grilling Al Pastor on a trompo. I can’t resist pulling over to get some tacos when I see that lol.Fast forward to more recently when they closed down that location and focused on the Jackson at Alum Rock location in a former Carl’s Jr space. They still have the same Taquero, Luis, but in the evening starting from Friday through Sunday. There are other Chalateco locations, however, the Jackson location seems to be the main location and their quality is much higher than the others. They have many dishes on their menu, including pupusas, enchiladas, tortas, Birria, and much more. They are decent but what I will keep coming back for are their Al Pastor Tacos. The tortillas are nice, thin and double layered. The flavor has that nice bit of tanginess and oily meat to go with the diced onions, cilantro, and flick of pineapple. The quality of their tacos is higher from Friday until Sunday when Luis the taquero is doing his thing. The waitresses will bring the tortillas and fixings out to him, and he shaves the pastor straight off the trompo onto the tortilla then brings it straight to your table. Some might find the prices to be off-putting compared to some of the other Mexican or Salvadoran restaurants in San Jose. Can’t say that I blame them. For my birthday party a couple years ago, the bill came out to quite a bit more than expected. So keep an eye on what you are ordering or it could add up fast. They finally got a card machine, so you don’t need to withdraw money from the ATM to pay if you don’t have cash on hand.In my opinion, El Chalateco on Jackson & Alum Rock have the best Al Pastor Tacos that I’ve found in San Jose, by far. They hold up against street tacos I’ve had in East LA. They make the tacos at the massively overrated Nuevas Generaciones taste flavorless in comparison. Beyond that, the service, the cost, and all the other stuff doesn’t really matter to me as long as I can get my tacos.
June 01 · Danny K (DSKO)Now taking digital payments. Low reviews seem to be from those previously disgruntled by this.Just wanted to stop at any taqueria in the area. Will visit again if I'm working around here. Quesabirria appears to be a staple here and was very good. Chips and salsa complimentary along with plenty of limes, hot sauce, and seasoning.
August 13 · Elliot KamperWe love coming here for our pupusa fix! Our favs are the revueltas (pork, fried beans & cheese) with all the fixings and I love them extra toasty. We always order the Volcanes (almost like tostadas with cheese, choice of meat & loaded w/ pico de gallo) and they never disappoint. My husband loves the consomé de pollo - it's a must for him no matter what the weather is like. Just FYI - Cash only, but they have an ATM.
September 28 · Andrea LermaFirst and last time i eat here The service was bad. The food was bad even the drink i ordered was bad. Plus overpriced. Wasted my time and money. Disgusting food. Hateful lazy servers. Don't waste your hard earned money.
